They send Prince Andrew out to get some scout reports from Prince Kózlovski. It is noted that Prince Andrew has changed since he left Russia, and is now less indolent and more agreeable.  When he reaches Prince Kózlovski, they chat about Austria's rumoured defeat, and a bandaged General Mack comes through the door wishing to speak with Prince Kózlovski, who emerges from his study.

General Mack imparts the news that Austria had indeed been defeated, and Prince Nevitski and Zherkóv both jest about the defeat to the generals, which Prince Andrew gets a bee in his bonnet about.

On October 11th 1805, a regiment arrives in Braunau, having spent 24 hours marching without rest, as during the night, they had been commanded to clean up their equipment and clothing for an inspection by General Kutúzov in the morning.  They arrive looking pretty good, except for some holes in their boots which had worn out sometime in the previous 700 miles.

A call goes down the line for the commander of the third company to make himself known to General Kutúzov.  The general comes and shouts at him and Dólokhov, an officer of the company who has been demoted, and is for reasons unknown wearing a blue great coat.

Characters Present:

Prince Andrew Bolkónski
Princess Lisa Bolkónskaya
Prince Nicholas Bolkónski
Princess Mary Bolkónskaya
the random French woman, Mademoiselle Bourienne

Setting:

Bald Hill Estate

Prince Andrew is getting ready to leave, and he pretends not to be sentimental about leaving when his sister, Princess Mary comes to speak to him.   She reiterates that it would be better for his wife Princess Lisa to go into the city as it was too isolated at Bald Hills Estate, which he disagrees with and then says that he doesn't like Mademoiselle Bourienne.

Prince Andrew then goes to say goodbye to his father, Prince Nicholas, who seems to be proud of him for going to war over staying with his wife, and hands a letter to him, to be delivered to Michael Ilariónovich (General Kutúzov).  Prince Nicholas also expresses concern over his own death and gives Prince Andrew some manuscripts and will-like documents to be read after his death.

Prince Andrew then says goodbye to his wife and leaves.
