The French army were dispirited, so clung together in a mass, whereas the Russian army were in good spirits, so took individual actions, and engaged in guerrilla warfare.

Tolstoy discusses the Battle of Borodíno, and surmises that though it was the last large battle, and that it was won by the French, it did not win them the war.

All of the burning of towns, including Moscow was outside of the normal rules of war, and then the French army ceased to exist.

The French are retreating not to France, as it is too far, but to Smolénsk, which is closer.

Kutúzov uses whatever little power he has to stop his army from attacking them, but Ermólov, Milorádovich, Plátov and others ignore him, and attempt to break up two French corps.

They are unsuccessful, and the French push on to Smolénsk.

Kutúzov orders the evacuation of Kalúga and Dokhtúrov goes on to Malo-Yaroslávets.

The French army are in retreat.  There is a council at Malo-Yaroslávets, where Napoleon, in agreement with a simple soldier called Mouton, decides that the French must get away as quickly as possible.

Some Cossacks almost capture Napoleon, but get distracted by plundering instead.

Similar to all old people at night, Kutúzov is having trouble sleeping. He is thinking about the Battle of Borodíno, and the general events of the war. 

He hears a noise outside, which turns out to be Bolkhovítinov, Toll and Konovnítsyn.  They tell him the news of Napoleon no longer being in Moscow.  Kutúzov begins to weep, and says that Russia is saved.

Bolkhovítino is the officer selected to deliver the dispatch to the General Staff, and he arrives in the middle of a warm autumn night.

He wakes up Konovnítsyn and Shcherbínin, who make the decision that Kutúzov must be awoken at once.

Dokhtúrov had been quietly going about his business during each battle with the French, and has not only survived, but has done a good job at doing what he was supposed to do. 

He has now been sent to Formínsk to launch an attack against the French.  However, he finds the entire French army there, instead of just a few battalions and is unsure what to do. 

Dokhtúrov sends a dispatch to the General Staff to find out what to do.

Volume 3: Book 13 - Chapter 14

Pierre and the rest of the prisoners are in the parade of people, carts and looted goods leaving Moscow.

The French soldiers begin to treat the prisoners quite badly, and give then horse-flesh for dinner after a full day of marching at a fast pace.

Pierre sits by himself and laughs uncontrollably, as while the French have his body as a prisoner, they cannot imprison his immortal soul.

Volume 3: Book 13 - Chapter 13

The French have started to evacuate Moscow, and are intent on taking the prisoners along with them.

Pierre's friend Sokolóv lays dying in the shed, and Pierre goes to try and talk to an officer to find out if he can take him to the hospital.  The officer, who he thought that he was in good standing with, suddenly doesn't recognise Pierre, and tells Pierre that Sokolóv can walk. 

They leave the shed and walk past a church, where they see a dead, sooty man propped up against the church wall.

It has been four weeks since Pierre was imprisoned, and rather than feeling trapped, Pierre feels more at peace than he has ever felt.

In not having control of basic needs such as cleanliness  and good food and also having shed any need for pretence as to his actual identity or occupation, he is able to focus on higher things such as philanthropy and inner freedom.

He also thinks on his romantic love for Natasha.

Pierre is still a prisoner in the shed, but seems to be allowed to go around in the yard outside.  He has lost weight, but, has maintained a look of manly strength about him.

Pierre has become a favourite with the French, since he speaks French very well, and also, is educated.  

A French soldier who gave some linen to one of the prisoners, Karatáev, to make into a shirt, returns to pick up the shirt.  The Frenchman wants to keep the scraps, but then understands that Karatáev would like to keep them to turn into leg straps, and lets him keep them.

All of the measures that Napoleon put in place failed. 

After the people who lit the fires were executed, Moscow burnt down anyway; the French officers lost track of the Russian Army, which was only located after a time, perhaps by luck, but Murat.  And the looting continued.

Napoleon restores order to Moscow by declaring that the people who set the fires shall be punished.  

He writes a letter to Tsar Alexander, telling him that Count Rostopchín had been terrible, and then he makes Rostopchín burn his own houses down. 

Napoleon reinstates church services, and posts a proclamation encouraging citizens to return to their homes.

He sends Murat out in search of Kutúzov.

Volume 3: Book 13 - Chapter 7

General Kutúzov is in a column at the front of the army, and Ermólov keeps trying to convince him to attack. Kutúzov resists until he receives news that the French army are in retreat.  Even then, he insists that the troops stop their advance every hundred paces to rest for 45 minutes. 

The Russian side do not manage to capture Murat, and apart from Kutúzov's column, the most the army manages is to get a few hundred of its own men killed. 

Kutúzov and Ermólov both receive awards from the Tsar for their part in the Battle of Tarútino.

Volume 3: Book 13 - Chapter 6

On the road leading from Stromílova to Dmítrovsk



Orlóv-Denisov's men reach their planned destination for the attack before the rest of the columns reach theirs.  Orlóv-Denísov receives news that Murat might be able to be captured, as he is not camped too far away. 

So, instead of waiting for the battle to begin, Orlóv-Denísov sends two groups of Cossacks, headed by Major-General Grekóv, to capture Murat.  The Cossacks then get caught up in a battle with the French, and will no longer listen to orders, and do not capture Murat as they are too distracted by the fighting. Orlóv-Denísov then gets paranoid that the news that Murat could be captured was actually a ruse.

Things go terribly, and it is probably a good thing that Orlóv-Denísov's column was the least important in the plan of attack.

Volume 3: Book 13 - Chapter 5

A decrepit Kutúzov reluctantly drives from Letashóvka to where the attacking columns are supposed to meet.  Instead of  finding an army ready to attack, he finds men busy having breakfast and doing general camp activities. 

He discovers that his orders to attack have not been received, and goes purple with rage and shouts at a lot of officers.  He is also indignant that he, a Supreme Highness, should be made a laughing stock.

Kutúzov reissues the order for the attack, which he disagreed with the first time round and continues to disagree with, to take place on the morrow.

A plan is drawn up to attack the Russians on October 4.   A young officer is dispatched to take the plans to Ermólov, but Ermólov seems to have disappeared.

At 8pm, the officer finally discovers that that Ermólov has been at a party all day. He arrives to find general drunkenness, and hands the letter over. 

There is gossip amongst the staff of the Horse Guard that Ermólov went missing on purpose to get Konovnítsyn in trouble.

Kutúzov receives a letter from the Tsar, who is upset about losing Moscow, and is worried that Petersburg is under threat.

Shapoválov discovers Murat's army in a forest while out scouting and tells everyone that he was almost captured by the French.  Kutúzov receives this news.

Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 16

Prince Andrew, prior to becoming odd (as described by Natasha to Mary,knew he was dying and also, held a great love for Natasha.

He has a dream that death waited for him behind , and he feels that he died in that dream.  For the next two days, he behaves oddly and distantly, until Mary arrives.

Andrew continues to behave in this way for a few days, and then he dies.  Everyone weeps.

Mary discovers Andrew in a cold state of calm, which is very upsetting to her.  He has found some kind of holy existence in the knowledge that he will soon die. 

His son Nicholas is brought to him, and Mary cries at the thought of Nicholas not having a father. Andrew tries to warm up and be compassionate, but with great difficulty.

Nicholas takes a liking to Natasha.

Mary travels with determination to see her brother.  She is met at the door by Sonya, who gives her big fake smiles, though Mary doesn't know why. 

Natasha comes running from Andrew's sickbed, and she and Mary cry on each others shoulders. Despite not liking her much before, Mary forgets this, and sees that Natasha is only sorrowful for her and her brother. 

Andrew's condition has taken a turn for the worse.

Pierre is taken to a dark shed, where he is confined with a number of Russian soldiers.  Pierre has lost all sense of order in the universe since witnessing the murders by men who didn't want to commit them, and has even lost hope in God.

He is befriended by Platón Karatáev, who has such a kindly voice that it makes Pierre want to weep.   Platón tells Pierre his life story, and gives Pierre some potatoes and salt to eat.

When Platón falls asleep, Pierre listens to the man's snoring, and begins to discover a new beauty in the universe.

Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 11

Pierre is sixth in line in a queue of prisoners waiting to get executed, and the French commanding officer says that they will be shot in pairs.

Pierre is unable to look at the first two pairs who are shot and pushed into a pit. He realises as the fifth in line is led away alone, that he and the remaining prisoners had been brought along to watch, as a kind of warning. 

He makes himself watch the young man get executed, and tries to be close to him as they start throwing soil into the pit, but is ushered away by French soldiers, keen to cover up their crime. 

Pierre overhears one of them trying to justify the murders by saying that they shouldn't have lit fires, but upon looking at who said it, realises that the soldier feels dreadful about it.

Pierre is taken for an interview with Davoût, who looks like he is about to summon an shred of humanity and not have Pierre executed.  However, before this happens, Davoût is interrupted by an adjutant, and orders Pierre to be taken away.

Pierre doesn't know where he is to be taken, but feels like the system is killing him, rather than people in particular.

Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 9

Though Pierre was intitially treated with respect by the first soldiers that arrested him, he is treated like a common prisoner by the change of the guard.  He is moved into a prison cell with several Russian plebs, who avoid him, and make fun of him for being a gentleman. 

He is taken to court to explain himself, and is unable to give any satisfactory answer. 

When the fires of Moscow begin to overwhelm the city, he feels upset.  He is not coping well leading up to his second court hearing, which is sometime around September 8th.

Sonya has been asked by Natalya to break off her engagement with Nicholas, as the family really could do with the money that will be gained if he marries Princess Mary instead.

Sonya refuses to promise, and after witnessing Natasha and Andrew being thrown back together, decides that God will somehow prevent Princess Mary and Nicholas getting married.  So, with a serene confidence that God will aid her marriage to Nicholas, she sends him a letter, breaking off the engagement. 

Natasha spends all of her time with Prince Andrew, who seems to be getting better.

Nicholas goes to church, and sees Mary praying with her whole being, and feels more in love with her than before.

Mary has heard that her brother, Prince Andrew, has been wounded, and is about to set off to be with him.

Nicholas is depressed as he continues to stand by his childhood promise to marry his cousin, Sonja Rostova, and prays to god to release him from the promise.  God works super quickly on this one, and Nicholas receives a letter from Sonya about ten minutes after his prayer.  Sonya has released him from his promise.

The setting up of Mary and Nicholas has begun, and Nicholas visits Mary.  Mary blossoms into a beautiful woman upon meeting Nicholas again.  

As Mary's father died so recently, it is inappropriate for them to become betrothed, but Catherine and Anna keep relaying romantic information between the two of them. 

Nicholas is struggling, as even though he is in love with her, and doesn't think about her in the same terms as the targets of his flirtations, he also is unable to think of Mary as his wife.

Nicholas is called away from his shameless flirting to speak with Anna Ignátyevna Malvínyseva, who happens to be an aunt of Princess Mary Bolkonskaya. It also happens that Princess Mary is travelling with her aunt.

Nicholas and Anna speak briefly, and he is quickly dismissed.  Catherine Pretróvna calls Nicholas aside, and asks if he would like to be set up with Princess Mary.   Nicholas explains the complication of Sonya to her, but then concurs that he does like Princess Mary very much.

Nicholas is released from the camps and fighting, and is sent to inspect provincial Russia, where he inspects local militias and buys horses. 

He is invited to Catherine Petróvna's house, and he arrives late, and finds that is an impromptu ball in progress. 

All of the women want his attention, but he ends up flirting with a plump blonde woman who is married.  Her husband is not pleased.

Nine days after the abandonment of Moscow, M. Michaud, French, but with unbreakable Russian loyalties, arrives to confirm the news to Tsar Alexander.

Alexander is saddened by the news, but confirms that he will never sign Russia over to Napoleon.

Anna returns from the Emperor's birthday celebrations with news of Kutúzov's resistance against the French.  Rumours are swirling that Napoleon has been captured and that the French have surrendered.  News that Moscow has been given up unsettles everyone. 


News also arrives late in the evening that Countess Hélène Berzúkhova committed suicide by taking too many pills given to her by the Queen of Spain's physician, to treat her angina. Apparently, she had become paranoid that the old count that had married knew that she had written a letter to her other husband, Pierre.

It is the Emperor's birthday on the morrow, and Anna has received an invitation.

Pierre staggers back to the place where the little girls family were last seen, but they are gone.  

Some nearby people recognise Pierre's description of the little girl's family and point him towards their new location.  Before Pierre can leave, he notices some Armenians being assaulted by some rough looking French soldiers.  He goes to their rescue, and is eventually arrested for having a dagger upon his person.

Pierre wakes up rather hungover and ashamed of the events of the previous evening.

However, he is determined to follow through on his quest to kill Napoleon. He realises that he cannot conceal his gun well enough, so despite his misgivings about using one, he takes a dagger.

On his way, he passes a weeping woman who thinks her daughter has been burnt to death in a house-fire.  He goes to investigate, and finds the girl in the back garden.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 32

Prince Andrew is inspected by a doctor, who makes unhappy sounds at the appearance and smell of Andrews mortifying flesh. 

Andrew is in a kind of delirium, and is experiencing some kind of hyper-sensitivity.  

Natasha enters, and he thinks it is another hallucination, but is pleased that it is actually her, so that he can share his new god-given-love for her.  Andrew suddenly feels a great empathy, and feels bad for his harsh rejection of her.  When she begs his forgiveness, he tells her there is nothing to forgive.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 31

Natasha has been quiet all day, since learning that the wounded Prince Andrew is with travelling with them. She is not even interested in Moscow burning down.

After everyone goes to sleep, she sneaks out to visit Prince Andrew.  She finds him feverish, but he smiles and holds out his hand for her to take.
