Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 9

Location:

Bald Hill Estate

Prince Andrew goes into see his wife Princess Lisa between contractions and he is nicer to her than he has ever been. 

Prince Andrew leaves as some new contractions begin and he hears terrible animal moans, a scream and eventually the wail of a baby come from the other side of the door.  The nurse rushes out of the room without making eye-contact with him, and the doctor looks ashen-faced.  Princess Mary died in the final moments of birth. 

The funeral happens, and then the baptism for the baby, who is called "Prince Nicholas Andréevich".

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 8

Location:

Bald Hill Estate

Princess Lisa goes into labour in the morning and Princess Mary runs for the midwife.  Princess Lisa stays in labour all day and well into the night.  

Much to everyone's delight, a male voice inquiring after his father is heard from downstairs late in the evening - Prince Andrew has finally returned home.

Book 3 - Chapter 5

Location:

Bald Hill Estate


Everybody has gone to bed and Prince Nicholas, Princess Mary and Mademoiselle Bourienne are all having trouble sleeping.

When Princess Mary goes to her father for her morning lessons, he shouts at her to take an hour to decide whether she is to become Prince Anatole's wife.  On her way out of his study, she catches Prince Anatole and Mademoiselle Bourienne in a passionate embrace. 

Princess Mary later declines the offer of marriage made by Prince Vasíle for his son and Prince Nicholas is delighted.

Princess Mary goes to comfort Mademoiselle Bourienne and makes the decision to help her marry Prince Anatole, and give her money if this will help her.

Book 3 - Chapter 3

Location: 

Bald Hill Estate

Old Prince Nicholas receives a letter from Prince Vasíli, stating his intention to visit with his son in a fortnight.  It seems that Vasíli is to bring his son, Anatole, to meet Princess Mary with the intention of marrying them off.

Prince Nicholas dislikes Prince Vasíli and goes out of the house on the morning of their arrival to shout at the guards for clearing the driveway of snow, and orders them to replace it. 

Princess Mary is a bit nervous about the arrival of their guests and things are made worse when Princess Lisa and Mademoiselle Bourienne try to make her look attractive.  They go overboard, and Princess Mary ends up looking worse than before, and tells them to leave her alone.

Book 1 - Chapter 28

Setting:  

Bald Hill Estate


Prince Andrew is getting ready to leave, and he pretends not to be sentimental about leaving when his sister, Princess Mary comes to speak to him.   She reiterates that it would be better for his wife Princess Lisa to go into the city as it was too isolated at Bald Hills Estate, which he disagrees with and then says that he doesn't like Mademoiselle Bourienne. 

Prince Andrew then goes to say goodbye to his father, Prince Nicholas, who seems to be proud of him for going to war over staying with his wife, and hands a letter to him, to be delivered to Michael Ilariónovich (General Kutúzov).  Prince Nicholas also expresses concern over his own death and gives Prince Andrew some manuscripts and will-like documents to be read after his death.

Prince Andrew then says goodbye to his wife and leaves.

Book 1 - Chapter 27

Setting:

Bald Hill Estate

The characters all go in to the dining room to eat dinner. They discuss the war again and old Prince Nicholas declares that today's men don´t even know the ABC of war and that they are all babies.  He goes onto claim that Bonaparte is but a little Frenchy and that there is nothing wrong in Europe at all at the moment.

Dinner ends, and Princess Lisa is impressed by Prince Nicholas and says so to Princess Mary.

Book 1 - Chapter 26

Bald Hill Estate


Princess Lisa and Prince Andrew arrive at Bald Hills and Lisa and Mary are overjoyed to see one another. There is much rejoicing.

Prince Andrew goes into the drawing room to visit with his father, Prince Nicholas. They discuss the war for the whole time. Prince Andrew reveals that the Russian stratagem will be to send an army of ninety-thousand to Prussia to threaten them out of their neutrality, send some of these men join some Swedish forces at Stralsund, send two-hundred-and-twenty-thousand Russians to join up with one-hundred-thousand Austrians in Italy and the Rhine and send fifty-thousand men to join up with as many English in Naples. Essentially, the armies are to surround the French forces and attack them from various sides.

Book 1 - Chapter 25

A letter received from Julie Kuragina , who was at the Rostov´s dinner thing, upsetting one of the Rostóv daughters for flirting with the Rostóv cousin, Nicholas.

Location:

An estate called Bald Hill, to which Prince Nicholas Bolkónski was exiled by the Emperor.


Princess Mary, who seems to be quite timid, goes for her morning geography lesson with her father.

She doesn´t understand straight away, Nicholas gets cranky as she expected and she retires to her room to finish her lesson for the day and also read a letter that Julie sent.

Julie says that Nicholas Rostóv has gone to war now, and that there will possibly be an arranged marriage between herself and Pierre, who is the new Count Berzúkhov.
