Kutúzov is sitting quietly, giving permission to give orders, and hearing reports, in which he learns that General Bagratión has been wounded, which saddens him.

He is under the impression that their side is winning, but he is approached by the Wolzogen, who has been sent by Barclay de Tolley, to smugly declare that they are losing, and that they should retreat. Kutúzov reacts angrily, and is then approached by Raévski, who has spent all day at the Knoll Battery, and says that the French are no longer attacking.

Kutúzov asks Raévski if he thinks that they should retreat, like some others do, and then he sends out an order to ready the army to attack on the morrow.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 5

Prince Andrew takes his regiment along the avenue leading to Bald Hill Estate.  Here he meets Alpátych, who is frightened, and also confirms that Old Prince Nicholas and Princess Mary have gone to Moscow.

He receives a letter from General Bagratión, saying that Smolénsk had fallen, though he didn't understand why, as his men found for 35 hours, and Napoleon's fell back after 14 hours.  General Bagratión goes on to say that the whole army is suspicious of the Imperial aide-de-camp, Wolzogen, and says that he is more Napoleon's man than Alexander's.

All the men go for a swim in the pond as the weather has been hot.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 1

A general discussion of how the emperors approached the war, plus some highlights regarding army movement and town destruction.

Tsar Alexander left the army after a while, so that the men could be focused on one leader. 

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 3

The pre-dinner drinks go on, and we learn that Pierre  doesn't fit in properly with young men or old men, because of his wealth and youth, respectively.

Count Ilya Rostóv introduces his son, Nicholas Rostóv to General Bagratión, who has had his moustache trimmed.  Nicholas behaves awkwardly.

Dinner is served.

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 2

Rostóv, pleased to be home, has a new outfit and is showing it off in Moscow society.  He is no longer interested in a relationship with Sonja and has instead been doing manly things, such as going to brothels; going on sprees with Denisóv; and to a place called the English Club.

His father, Count Ilya Rostóv organsises a dinner for General Bagratión at the English Club and all of the main figures from the war are there.  Various events of the war are discussed, and it comes to pass that nobody realises that Prince Andrew Bolkónski has been captured by the French, and is still alive.

Volume 1: Book 3 - Chapter 17

Nicholas Rostóv is under the command of General Bagratión in the right flank of the army, who are yet to start fighting.

Bagratión disagrees with Prince Dolgurúkov's demand that they join the battle and sends Rostóv on a six mile trek, on which he will probably die, to ask General Kutúzov whether they should join or not.

Rostóv asks if he can ask the emperor if he runs into him first, which Bagratión agrees to.  Rostóv rides off happily, but upon reaching the other side of the army, realises that the Austrians and Germans are firing at each other, and that they are completely flanked by the French.

Volume 1: Book 3 - Chapter 13

The army camp in Olmütz

It is the evening of the day that the council of war took place, and Nicholas Rostóv is on watch, riding around the area that his platoon are camped in. 

Rostóv is so tired that he keeps dropping off to sleep, and wakes up to the sound of a gunshot coming from where the French were supposed to have retreated from.

He finds General Bagratión and Prince Dolgorúkov discussing the gunshots and he volunteers to go back over.  The French fire at Rostóv again, and he gallops back to the General and the Prince, who find out he is actually the young Count Rostóv, and tell him to stay with them.  Rostóv hopes that this will provide an opportunity to hand-deliver a letter to the Emperor in the morning.

Volume 1: Book 3 - Chapter 7

A camp 10 miles from Olmütz

Boris arrives at the camp to deliver a letter, some money from his family, and a letter of recommendation to General Bagratíon from Rostóvs family and Princess Anna Mikháylovna Drubetskáya.

Rostóv casts the letter of recommendation on to the floor, saying he doesn't want to be an adjutant, and Boris says that it would be better than being on the front line. 

Nicholas recounts the epic story of how he was wounded, leaving out the bit about falling of his horse and running away from the French.  

Halfway through the story, Prince Andrew comes in, and rolls his eyes in response to all of the bragging, and says he will come back later to talk to Boris.  Nicholas takes great offense, and the two have a heated exchange of words, ending with Bolkónski saying that he didn't take offense, as Nicholas is young and his rudeness was of not matter to him.

Book 2 - Chapter 21

It is nightfall and the battle is coming to an end.   Rostóv, still with a wounded arm, rides on one of the canons in Captain Tushín's battery until they set camp for the evening.

Tushín is called into a hut that has some high-ranking officers and General Bagratión dining in it.  Bagratión scolds him in front of everyone for losing two guns in the battle.  Tushín, who is on the brink of exhaustion, apologises and is then unable to say anything, lest he implicate other officers.  Bolkónski, furious, speaks out and says that Tushín actually saved the day and that they should be thanking him.  

It is revealed that the French do not attack again on the following day and that the remains of Bagratión's detachment are reunited to Kutúzov's army.

Book 2 - Chapter 19

Captain Tushín's plan to set the village on fire was successful, and the French are slightly delayed as they rush to put it out.

General Bagratión sends Zherkóv to tell the left flank to retreat, and Zherkóv finds a German colonel and a Russian general arguing.  Apparently the German won't command his men to fight as they are outnumbered - he refuses on the grounds that he doesn't want to do kill his men for the entertainment of the Russian.  The French get in around the back of the Germans, so they have to fight to get out anyway.

Rostóv's arm gets maimed horribly when he falls of his horse, which got maimed seconds before, and he runs away when he notices French soldiers coming to either capture or kill him.

Book 2 - Chapter 18

The battle is in full swing and Bolkónski walks past several soldiers who are bleeding quite gruesomely.

Bagratíon continues to act as though everything is going according to plan and seems delusional but happy.  He joins the march on the French army.

Book 2 - Chapter 17

More canon balls are fired at the Russian army, and though not having received orders, Captain Tushín of the Russian battery starts firing canons back into the village that some of the French army are in, with the aim of setting it on fire.

Bolkónski, now going around with Bagratíon, notes that though Bagratíon does not appear to be giving orders, or to even have a plan, he acts as though everything that happens is going according to how he wanted or expected it to.  This has a calming effect on the soldiers that he interacts with. 

The movement of the French army around the Russian army tends to suggest that the Russians are doomed.

Book 2 - Chapter 15

Bolkónski, having managed to convince Kutüzov to ride ahead, arrives at  General Bagratión's encampment in Znaime.   The battle has not yet commenced, and nobody there really knows what is going on. 

Bolkónski asks to tour the camp and upon reaching the lines, and notes that the Russians and the French are so close that they can speak.  He rides along the line for a bit, and spots Dólokhov and a Frenchman taunting each other.
