Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 4

Still at the dinner at the English Club, Pierre is sitting across the table from Fedor Ivanovich Dólokhov and Nicholas Rostóv.  

Pierre is unhappy because he received a letter from his cousin earlier stating that Pierre's new wife, Hélène is having an affair with Dólokhov, which serves to confirm the rumours already flying about town.  Berzúkhov is especially insulted as he previously helped Dólokhov out by giving him money and accommodation in his home.

Eventually Pierre snaps, calls Dólokhov a scoundrel and challenges him to a duel the following morning.

The next morning arrives and pistols are handed to Dólokhov and Pierre, who has to ask how the trigger works, as he has never fired a gun before.

Book 2 - Chapter 13

Near Hetzelsdorf

Bolkónski leaves Brünn and seems to ride for some time until he comes across a disheveled and disorderly Russian army on the high road near Hetzelsdorf.  The road is clogged and he comes across a soldier on a cart whipping a woman trying to get past.  Bolkónski makes the soldier stop with some stern words and feels dismayed with the quality of the Russian army in general.

He comes across an empty looking house in which to rest and finds Nesvítski.  Kutüzov enters the house in a what can only be described as a tizwas and commands Bolkónski to accompany him, but to where, he does not say.

Book 2 - Chapter 7

Location: 

Still on the bridge over the River Danube in Enns

The enemy is still attacking and the bridge that the army are on is clogged with chaos and soldiers. The soldiers let  a German family through and the men act seedily towards the young woman and offer to buy her off her husband.  The family eventually gets through and Nesvitski notices canon balls hurtling into the water under the bridge. Denísov makes it onto the bridge and yells at Nesvitski to get the soldiers to let him pass.

Denísov and Nesvítski make it to the end of the bridge and stop the infantry from going on, to ease the congestion.

Book 2 - Chapter 6

Location: 

Crossing the River Danube at Enns

It is raining horribly, and General Kutuzóv and his army are falling back to Vienna, and burning bridges down as they go.   

They seem to have paused in their march for a break and Nesvítski, who is described as having a moist-lipped handsome mouth, is handing out pies to some of the officers.  They joke about visiting the nearby nunnery for entertainment.  

Kutúzov notices an enemy battery not too far off, and orders an attack.  Large guns start firing and everyone seems excited.

Book 2 - Chapter 3

Location: 

Kutúzov's private room

Kotúzov, the Austrian General and Prince Andrew Bolónski are going through some documents and letters from Archduke Ferdinand and are discussing General Mack and whether Austria had been defeated or not.

They send Prince Andrew out to get some scout reports from Prince Kózlovski. It is noted that Prince Andrew has changed since he left Russia, and is now less indolent and more agreeable.  When he reaches Prince Kózlovski, they chat about Austria's rumoured defeat, and a bandaged General Mack comes through the door wishing to speak with Prince Kózlovski, who emerges from his study.

General Mack imparts the news that Austria had indeed been defeated, and Prince Nevitski and Zherkóv both jest about the defeat to the generals, which Prince Andrew gets a bee in his bonnet about.

Book 2 - Chapter 2

Zherkóv - former member of a "wild set" in Petersburg run by Dólokhov

Location:

Braunau

General Kutúzov arrives to inspect the army, with Prince Andrew and Prince Nesvítski who are joking privately.  Prince Andrew reminds Kutúzov that he wanted to inspect Dólokhov, which he does, and proceeds to shame for actions that got him demoted.

The regimental commander has a conversation with Captain Timokhin, who reveals that Prince Andrew is a moody character - moody one day, wild the next - and that he almost killed a Jew while they were in Poland. The Captain threatens to take Dólokhov's epaulettes if he stuffs up again.

Zherkóv rides up to Dolókhov and asks him if we wants to play cards, who declines as he wants to restore his good name.
