Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 16

Prince Andrew, prior to becoming odd (as described by Natasha to Mary,knew he was dying and also, held a great love for Natasha.

He has a dream that death waited for him behind , and he feels that he died in that dream.  For the next two days, he behaves oddly and distantly, until Mary arrives.

Andrew continues to behave in this way for a few days, and then he dies.  Everyone weeps.

Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 15

Mary discovers Andrew in a cold state of calm, which is very upsetting to her.  He has found some kind of holy existence in the knowledge that he will soon die. 

His son Nicholas is brought to him, and Mary cries at the thought of Nicholas not having a father. Andrew tries to warm up and be compassionate, but with great difficulty.

Nicholas takes a liking to Natasha.

Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 8

Sonya has been asked by Natalya to break off her engagement with Nicholas, as the family really could do with the money that will be gained if he marries Princess Mary instead.

Sonya refuses to promise, and after witnessing Natasha and Andrew being thrown back together, decides that God will somehow prevent Princess Mary and Nicholas getting married.  So, with a serene confidence that God will aid her marriage to Nicholas, she sends him a letter, breaking off the engagement. 

Natasha spends all of her time with Prince Andrew, who seems to be getting better.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 32

Prince Andrew is inspected by a doctor, who makes unhappy sounds at the appearance and smell of Andrews mortifying flesh. 

Andrew is in a kind of delirium, and is experiencing some kind of hyper-sensitivity.  

Natasha enters, and he thinks it is another hallucination, but is pleased that it is actually her, so that he can share his new god-given-love for her.  Andrew suddenly feels a great empathy, and feels bad for his harsh rejection of her.  When she begs his forgiveness, he tells her there is nothing to forgive.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 31

Natasha has been quiet all day, since learning that the wounded Prince Andrew is with travelling with them. She is not even interested in Moscow burning down.

After everyone goes to sleep, she sneaks out to visit Prince Andrew.  She finds him feverish, but he smiles and holds out his hand for her to take.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 17

Location:

Moscow 

Sonya discovers that one of the wounded officers is Prince Andrew, who is mortally wounded.  She tells the family, who are saddened by the news, but none of them tell Natasha the news when she asks. 

The Rostóv's are finally ready to leave, and join the procession of carts leaving the city.  Natasha keeps an eye on the cart carrying Prince Andrew, even though she doesn't know that it carries him. 

Natasha spots Pierre, who  seems to be disguised as a commoner, and when they speak, he is despondent.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 14

Location:

Moscow 

Madame Schoss returns from town, and frightens Natalya with news of rioting in the streets.

Natasha decides to get involved in the packing, and finally convinces everyone that she is not annoying by fitting some carpets and crockery into boxes that nobody else had success packing. She does this by abandoning all of the cheap wares.

The first of the wounded soldiers is brought into the house. To everyone's shock, it is Prince Andrew.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 9

Borodíno, on the way to Moscow


Pierre, asleep in his carriage, has several nightmares which twist his time in the Masonic Lodge together with the horrors he has seen in battle. 

His driver wakes him, and tells him that it is time to go, and Pierre is frustrated that he doesn't know what his dreams were trying to tell him. 


On the way to Moscow, Pierre gives a ride to a wounded general, who tells him of Prince Anatole Kurágin's death, and also, of Prince Andrew Bolkónski's death.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 37

Characters Present:

Location:

In a medical tent in Borodíno


Andrew finds himself in a make-shift theatre with three operating tables. There are two other men being operated on, and Andrew thinks he recognises the one having his leg amputated.

A doctor comes and orders Andrew to be undressed. Andrew passes out from the pain in his abdomin but awakes with his leg bandaged.  He looks closely at the man that he recognised, who is sobbing and frightened, and begging to be allowed to look at his leg. 

Andrew realises it is Anatole Kurágin, who he had despised for so long, but feels sudden empathy, love and forgiveness in the aftermath of his near-death experience.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 36

Between the Knoll Battery and Semënovsk



For a time, Andrew's regiment is kept in reserve, behind Semënovsk, and then moved up to be in between the Knoll Battery and Semënovsk.


After several hours of pacing with nervous energy, he asks his adjutant to get the men to fall back into a close formation, and before anything can be done, they come under fire. The adjutant tells Andrew to lie down, but he doesn't, and gets wounded in the stomach.


As Andrew is lying on the grass, he suddenly feels a rush of passion for the meadow, the grass, the times he had fallen in love, and life in general.  He wonders about this when he is waiting to be seen by a doctor at the hospital tent, and he decides that there is something about life that he doesn't understand.

Pierre, Andrew and Timokhin discuss the army under Kutúzov's command.  

Andrew realises that he is very upset at the thought of Moscow being taken by the French.

He sends Pierre away to have some rest before the battle, and then starts to think about how much he had loved Natasha, and how Anatole Kurágin saw nothing of her beautiful soul, only a fresh, young pretty thing to be taken.

Prince Andrew is having gloomy thoughts on what is the eve of the battle. He suspects it will be worse than the battle of Austerlitz, and wonders if he will die. 

Pierre is led to Andrew's tent, and Andrew is reminded of the happenings in Moscow with Natasha and greats Pierre with hostility. 

Pierre detects the hostility and everything gets a bit awkward.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 16

Prince Andrew and Kutúzhov have a meeting, where Kutúzhov says that he is very fond of Prince Andrew, and that he must consider him as a second father.

Kutúzhov then laments the actions taken in previous wars, that have led to the current state of Russia, and it's war with France.   He becomes quite emotional, and says that he will make the French eat their horses.

Prince Andrew leaves the meeting, feeling like the right choice was made to make Kutúzhov Commander-in-Chief.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 15

Prince Andrew is summoned to headquarters by General Kutúzhov, who is absent when Prince Andrew arrives.

Prince Andrew speaks with Denísov for a while, each reminding the other of Natasha, as they had both been betrothed to her. 

General Kutúzhov arrives, and is described as having grown "corpulent, flaccid and fat", and as making the porch creak as he dismounts from his horse.  

Kutúzhov gets a bit upset about news of Prince Nicholas' death.

Denísov suggests a clever way to cut French communication lines, which Kutúzhov discards, as he dislikes clever people for no obvious reason other than that he is old.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 5

Near Bald Hill Estate


Prince Andrew takes his regiment along the avenue leading to Bald Hill Estate.  Here he meets Alpátych, who is frightened, and also confirms that Old Prince Nicholas and Princess Mary have gone to Moscow.

He receives a letter from General Bagratión, saying that Smolénsk had fallen, though he didn't understand why, as his men found for 35 hours, and Napoleon's fell back after 14 hours.  General Bagratión goes on to say that the whole army is suspicious of the Imperial aide-de-camp, Wolzogen, and says that he is more Napoleon's man than Alexander's.

All the men go for a swim in the pond as the weather has been hot.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 4

Location:


Bald Hill Estate, then 40 miles away, in Smolénsk


Dessalles tells Princess Mary to send a letter via Alpátych to the governor in Smolénsk to ask advice as to whether they should leave Bald Hills or not, due to the fighting.

Alpátych arrives in Smolénsk, and the town is being abandoned, with sounds of firing getting closer, and chaos in the streets. 

He goes to visit the governor who gives him a letter to take back, which says that everything is fine in Smolénsk.

Alpátych then runs into Prince Andrew, who gives him another letter, saying that they should all go to Moscow.  

Alpáytch's innkeeper beats his wife to death for wanting to leave, and then houses start to burn down.

All of the men present have a heated discussion about strategy against Napoleon, who is now regarded with terror.

At the end of the meeting, Prince Andrew is asked where he would like to serve. He chooses to serve in the army instead of serving Tsar Alexander directly, and loses his social standing forever in Russia.

Volume 2: Book 9 - Chapter 10

Bennigsen's quarters

Prior to the letter being delivered to Alexander, Prince Andrew is summoned to see him at Bennigsen's quarters to discuss the events in Turkey. 

Andrew meets Pfuel there, who is described as having typical German confidence (which is more repulsive than the other confidences) drawn from a belief in truth and science.

There is then a description of where other nationalities draw their confidence from: the Italians from being excitable; the French for being sure that both men and women find them attractive; the English from being from the best organised state; and finally, the Russians, who draw their confidence from knowing that they do not know anything and do not believe that there is anything to be known.

Prince Andrew rejoins the army, and learns what each of the eight factions are about.

Anatole Kurágin is still not about, and Andrew learns that he has returned to Petersburg.

One of the factions wishes for Tsar Alexander to quit the army, and a letter is written to that effect.

Volume 2: Book 9 - Chapter 8

Location: 


Russia, then Turkey, then Bald Hill Estate

Prince Andrew rejoins the army under General Kutúzov, hoping to run unto Anatole, so that he can challenge him to a duel about something new, as to not further tarnish Natasha's name. 

He is unsuccessful, and eventually returns to Bald Hill Estate. Andrew finds everything much the same there: Princess Mary unhappy; his father still cantankerous but now missing a tooth; and Mademoiselle Bourienne still influencing matters where she should have no influence. He does find that his son, Nicholas has grown, and looks much like his late wife.

Prince Andrew has a fight with his father, and leaves the following day to return to the army without saying goodbye, despite Mary begging him to stay and speak to him, as the old prince might die soon.
