Despite being given the reward, Kutúzov remains unpopular with the Tsar.   Kutúzov does not, and will not understand why the war in 1812 must be carried on, since Russia has been saved, and its enemy made to flee.

The Tsar sees Europe in the bigger picture though, and decommissions Kutúzov on the grounds of poor health.  Toll, Konovnítsyn and Ermólov receive fresh appointments.

Kutúzov still not understanding what there is left for a Russian to do, dies.

Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 5

In 1812 and 1813, Kutúzov is openly called a blunderer, a procrastinator and is generally out of favour with everyone for his decisions to not go into battle.

He stayed on his path though, and kept his motto "patience and time".  

Tolstoy thinks, contrary to history and the influential figures of that time, that Kutúzov was a great man.

Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 4

The Russian army reaches Krásnoe with 50,000 men.  They attack the French against Kutúzov's wishes, since the war is won, and capture 26,000 men. 

Napoleon has been recorded in history as being heroic and grand, whereas Kutúzov has been described as crafty and dissolute.

Volume 3: Book 14 - Chapter 18

Though the French retreat from Russia is attributed to clever strategies devised by Kutúzov, this is wrong.

The Russian army was heavily depleted due to the freezing winter, and the only thing that they did to facilitate victory was to keep the  French moving, through guerrilla warfare.

Volume 3: Book 13 - Chapter 19

The French are retreating not to France, as it is too far, but to Smolénsk, which is closer.

Kutúzov uses whatever little power he has to stop his army from attacking them, but Ermólov, Milorádovich, Plátov and others ignore him, and attempt to break up two French corps.

They are unsuccessful, and the French push on to Smolénsk.

Volume 3: Book 13 - Chapter 17

Similar to all old people at night, Kutúzov is having trouble sleeping. He is thinking about the Battle of Borodíno, and the general events of the war. 

He hears a noise outside, which turns out to be Bolkhovítinov, Toll and Konovnítsyn.  They tell him the news of Napoleon no longer being in Moscow.  Kutúzov begins to weep, and says that Russia is saved.

Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 2

Anna returns from the Emperor's birthday celebrations with news of Kutúzov's resistance against the French.  Rumours are swirling that Napoleon has been captured and that the French have surrendered.  News that Moscow has been given up unsettles everyone. 

News also arrives late in the evening that Countess Hélène Berzúkhova committed suicide by taking too many pills given to her by the Queen of Spain's physician, to treat her angina. Apparently, she had become paranoid that the old count that had married knew that she had written a letter to her other husband, Pierre. 

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 19

Kutuzhóv gives the order to leave Moscow in the evening of the 1st of September, and the city is emptied by the next day.

Meanwhile, Napoleon looks down at the lights in Moscow, thinking magnanimous thoughts, such as how the Tsar and his own nobility could mingle in the Kremlin; and, how he could donate his riches to the charities of Moscow.  He has decided that he respects Moscow too much to destroy it. 

Napoleon's officers have discovered that Moscow is empty, but they are nervous about telling Napoleon, should he be embarrassed, furious or both.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 4

A Council of War in Andrew Savostyánov's hut.


Malásha watches the council with shy delight, and is happy when she sees Kutúzhov, who she in her mind, calls Granddad, even though her actual grandfather is Andrew.

They debate on whether to retreat from Moscow.  Kutúzov eventually decides to issue the command to retreat to beyond Moscow.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 3

Ermólov returns from inspecting the lines, and tells Kutúzov that the army will need to retreat to beyond Moscow. 

Kutúzov goes to Poklómy Hill, where he gets out of his carriage and sits on a bench. He is instantly surrounded by officers, and they have a serious discussion about whether or not to enact the retreat.

Kutúzov cannot bring himself to give the order, and decides that he must only trust his own judgement. 

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 30

Pierre oversleeps and misses the beginning of the battle.  He is eventually awakened by Boris who says that all the men and Kutúzov rode out ages ago.

Pierre gets ready quickly, and goes to have a look at the battle. The rolling green splendor of yesterday is now a beautiful scene of thousands of men; smoke from gun fire; and a mishmash of colours. 

He hears Kutúzov give an order to meet down near a crossing, and Pierre decides to go down there too.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 25

Pierre, Andrew and Timokhin discuss the army under Kutúzov's command.  

Andrew realises that he is very upset at the thought of Moscow being taken by the French.

He sends Pierre away to have some rest before the battle, and then starts to think about how much he had loved Natasha, and how Anatole Kurágin saw nothing of her beautiful soul, only a fresh, young pretty thing to be taken.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 22

Pierre meets Boris, and Boris promises to show him the line, and though the right flank is very strong, Boris says that the left flank is stronger, but then makes a doubtful sounding remark about Kutúzov knowing what he was doing.

Pierre then goes to speak to Kutúzov about joining the battle, and Boris places himself conveniently near (to be overheard by Kutúzov), and says to Pierre that the militia have put on clean white shirts to be killed in on the morrow.

Kutúzov loses concentration, like old people do, on the conversation, and asks his aide-de-camp to recite a verse, to which Kutúzov nods his head in rhythm to. 

Kutúzov then rides off with Pierre to show him the lines.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 21

Pierre arrives at Borodinó, but the battlefield is not what he expected, with the troops on both sides just lurking about in their camps. 

The camps are also not set on either side of a line, but are intermingled, and Pierre asks a nearby officer to explain what their position is. 

A procession comes with some holy men bringing a religious icon, Mary, from Smolénsk.  

Pierre sees Kutúzov bow and kiss the icon, and then have tremendous difficulty rising to his feet because of his great weight.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 16

Prince Andrew and Kutúzhov have a meeting, where Kutúzhov says that he is very fond of Prince Andrew, and that he must consider him as a second father.

Kutúzhov then laments the actions taken in previous wars, that have led to the current state of Russia, and it's war with France.   He becomes quite emotional, and says that he will make the French eat their horses.

Prince Andrew leaves the meeting, feeling like the right choice was made to make Kutúzhov Commander-in-Chief.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 15

Prince Andrew is summoned to headquarters by General Kutúzhov, who is absent when Prince Andrew arrives.

Prince Andrew speaks with Denísov for a while, each reminding the other of Natasha, as they had both been betrothed to her. 

General Kutúzhov arrives, and is described as having grown "corpulent, flaccid and fat", and as making the porch creak as he dismounts from his horse.  

Kutúzhov gets a bit upset about news of Prince Nicholas' death.

Denísov suggests a clever way to cut French communication lines, which Kutúzhov discards, as he dislikes clever people for no obvious reason other than that he is old.

Book 2 - Chapter 21

It is nightfall and the battle is coming to an end.   Rostóv, still with a wounded arm, rides on one of the canons in Captain Tushín's battery until they set camp for the evening.

Tushín is called into a hut that has some high-ranking officers and General Bagratión dining in it.  Bagratión scolds him in front of everyone for losing two guns in the battle.  Tushín, who is on the brink of exhaustion, apologises and is then unable to say anything, lest he implicate other officers.  Bolkónski, furious, speaks out and says that Tushín actually saved the day and that they should be thanking him.  

It is revealed that the French do not attack again on the following day and that the remains of Bagratión's detachment are reunited to Kutúzov's army.

End of Book 2

Book 2 - Chapter 14

One hundred and fifty thousand French, according to the spy, are advancing toward Znaime, and if they get there before the Russian army, Kutúzov will be cut off from reinforcements coming through from Russia.

He sends word to Bagratión who has a vanguard of four thousand men relatively nearby, and they march all night to Znaime and reach it some hours before the French. He is to stall the French until Kutúsov can arrive.

Prince Murat mistakes Bagratión's vanguard for the whole Russian army, and proposes a truce for three days while the rest of his army arrives but Bagratíon is not highly ranked enough to agree or disagree, so sends a message back to Kutúzov.   Bonaparte sends a letter via an adjudicate to Murat telling him not to be stupid and to attack the Russians on the following day.

Book 2 - Chapter 13

Bolkónski leaves Brünn and seems to ride for some time until he comes across a disheveled and disorderly Russian army on the high road near Hetzelsdorf.  The road is clogged and he comes across a soldier on a cart whipping a woman trying to get past.  Bolkónski makes the soldier stop with some stern words and feels dismayed with the quality of the Russian army in general.

He comes across an empty looking house in which to rest and finds Nesvítski.  Kutüzov enters the house in a what can only be described as a tizwas and commands Bolkónski to accompany him, but to where, he does not say.
