Horses are selected and the band of soldiers ride in to attack the French.  

Pétya is very excited, but keeps missing out on actually killing anyone, so he rides into the thick of things.  His horse stops suddenly and Pétya falls off, arms and legs twitching, and a Cossack notices that he has been shot in the head. 

Dólokhov and Denísov see his body, and Denísov, is heartbroken.

Pierre Bezukhov is among the prisoners rescued. 

Volume 3: Book 14 - Chapter 10

Pétya returns to the guerrilla camp, and tells Denísov the events of the evening. Denísov tells him to go to sleep, but Pétya is too excited, and begins to ready himself for the battle in the morning. 

He takes his sword to a Likhachëv to have it sharpened (for the first time), and despite being in a fairly rough environment, feels as though he is in fairy-land. He falls asleep and has all sorts of lovely dreams.  When he awakens, his sword is sharp enough to cut a French in half, and it is dawn.

Volume 3: Book 14 - Chapter 8

Dólokhov arrives, and proposes that he and one other put on French uniforms and infiltrate the French camp.  Denísov says that it is a terrible idea, and they argue. 

Pétya volunteers to go with Dólokhov, and Denísov is additionally unhappy about this. Pétya tells Denísov not to hinder him, lest it make things worse.

Volume 3: Book 14 - Chapter 7

Pétya has been released by his general to Denísov on the condition that he doesn't take any action against the French, since disobeying an order in a previous battle.

It is dinner time, and Pétya offers Denísov and company some grapes; some flints; and other items.  It occurs to him that the French drummer may be hungry, and frightened, and thinks to ask Denísov if he can invite him in for food. Denísov agrees, and the French boy comes into the tent grateful, but hungry. 

Volume 3: Book 14 - Chapter 6

Tíkhon returns to Denísov, but empty handed.  He says that he captured a Frenchman a while ago, but he was useless, and didn't want to waste Denísov's time.  Tíkhon then describes another soldier that he tried to capture, and how he was thwarted by three other soldiers who chased after him with their "little swords".  

Petya wants to laugh, but doesn't as nobody else laughs.  He realises later that Tíkhon had actually murdered the first man, and feels bad for the drummer.

Volume 3: Book 14 - Chapter 5

Denísov is hiding in the bushes looking at French troops with Pétya Rostóv.  The French drummer-boy who they have captured is confusedly naming French person of interest. 

Suddenly, Tíkhon, who they had sent to capture a "tongue" - that is, someone who will divulge information - runs by, being chased by the French.

It is revealed that Tíkhon, up until when he was shot, had an excellent record for capturing French soldiers.

Volume 3: Book 14 - Chapter 4

Denísov is on the lookout for guerrilla bands on his way to Shámshevo, and is waiting for the return of the man that they sent to capture a Frenchman to interrogate for information.  He is also waiting for work from Dólokhov.  

Along the path, he runs into Pétya Rostóv, who is very pleased to see him.  Pétya asks to join with Denísov, who agrees.

Volume 3: Book 14 - Chapter 3

The "Partisan War", which seems to refer to guerilla activity, began when the French reached Smolénsk. The power of this kind of warfare was first recognised by Davýdov and he is credited with normalising it. 

Denísov and Dólokhov have a plan that involves Denísov's Cossacks watching the French column on their way from from Mikúlino and Shámshevo.  They would then join forces with Dólokhov's men, and then attack the French at Shámshevo at dawn.

Denísov sends a man called Tíkhon Shcherbáty to capture a French quartermaster to press for information.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 15

Prince Andrew is summoned to headquarters by General Kutúzhov, who is absent when Prince Andrew arrives.

Prince Andrew speaks with Denísov for a while, each reminding the other of Natasha, as they had both been betrothed to her. 

General Kutúzhov arrives, and is described as having grown "corpulent, flaccid and fat", and as making the porch creak as he dismounts from his horse.  

Kutúzhov gets a bit upset about news of Prince Nicholas' death.

Denísov suggests a clever way to cut French communication lines, which Kutúzhov discards, as he dislikes clever people for no obvious reason other than that he is old.

Volume 1: Book 5 - Chapter 18

The officer's ward in the field hospital

Rostóv enters the officer's ward and notices that it does not smell as bad as the soldier's ward. He finds Denísov asleep in bed, despite it being close to noon.  Denísov's immediate neighbour is Captail Tushín, who has had an arm amputated.

Tushín tries to convince Denísov to write to the Emperor to ask for a pardon for stealing the goods wagons, but Tushín refuses to beg forgiveness for doing what he felt was the right thing. 

Denísov ends up handing such a document to Rostóv before he leaves, to give to the Emperor. 

Volume 1: Book 5 - Chapter 17

Location: 

A field hospital in a small Prussian town

The battle of Friedland was fought, but without Nicholas Rostóv's regiment.   Nicholas goes to visit Denísov, who was shot in the foot, and opted to go to hospital rather than be court marshalled.

When Nicholas arrives at the hospital, he is warned that five doctors and countless patients have died of typhus. He asks to see his friend and though the doctors suspect that he has died, they offer a tour of the ward just in case.

Nicholas is hit by a wall of stink upon entering the ward and sees pale, skeletal and amputated men sitting in their various fluids and states of decay.

Volume 1: Book 5 - Chapter 16

A dug-out at a distant outpost.

The regiment are still starving, and Denísov storms in to tell the quartermaster off, who was supposed to stop the men from eating Máska's root. 

Denísov then goes away and returns, with infantry-men on his heels - he has stolen two of their transport carts for their food to feed his men.  He tells them to bugger off, because his men have not eaten in two weeks.

Denísov is called away again, and when he returns he is speaking jibberish, and eventually Rostóv manages to glean that Denísov will be court-marshalled and tried for robbery.

Volume 1: Book 5 - Chapter 15

Near a ruined and deserted German village

Nicholas returns to his regiment, and is greeted warmly by Denísov, and he feels the same warmth as he does returning home.  They become rather close.

The winter is mostly over, and the thaw comes, making everything too soggy for supplies to get through for the men or horses.  Many of the men take to eating a root called "Máska's sweet root" which turns out to be toxic and makes the limbs and face swell up.  The doctors insist that they stop eating it, but they don't as their rations are tiny.

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 16

Count Ilya Rostóv arrives home, and Nicholas at first haughtily asks for the 43,000 rubles to pay back to Dólokhov, and then starts to beg and sob as his father starts to leave the room.  

In the meantime, Denísov accidentally proposes to Natasha, who runs off to ask advice from her mother, Countess Natalya Rostova.  The countess does not take it seriously at all, since Natasha is still so young and tells Denísov so, after both she and Natasha reject him.

Count Rostóv eventually raises the funds to pay his son's gambling debts to Dólokhov and Nicholas leaves to rejoin his regiment in Poland.

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 15

Nicholas returns home to find everyone in good spirits - Denísov is playing piano, and Natasha is looking at him adoringly. 

Sonya notes what a terrible mood Nicholas is in.  They are all concerned for about a minute, and then return to their gaiety. Natasha starts to sing.

Nicholas paces the room, waiting for his father to get home so he can ask for money, and wonders how anyone could be happy at such a time as this.

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 12

One of Iogel's balls in the ballroom at the Berzúkhov house (Moscow)

Nicholas, Natasha, Sonya and Vaska all attend a ball, thrown by Iogel, who by all accounts, hosts the best balls in Moscow. 

Vaska notes to Nicholas that his sister, Natasha, is quite beautiful as he watches her dancing.

A Polish dance called the "mazurka" starts, and Nicholas encourages Natasha to ask Vaska to dance, as he is famous for his execution of it.

Natasha and Vaska dance and he is so good at it  that Natasha looks at him in awe when it is over.  They spend the rest of the evening sitting together.

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 5

Fedor Ivanich Dólokhov shouts through the mist to Pierre to begin.  They pace towards each other, though Dólokhov has not yet raised his pistol.  Pierre fires, and Dólokhov falls over.  He has the right to fire back through, so Pierre stands still while Dólokhov shoots and misses.

In the carriage on the way back to town, the wounded Dólokhov takes Rostóv by the hand and beseeches him to go ahead and prepare his mother for the news that he may be dying. 

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 4

Still at the dinner at the English Club, Pierre is sitting across the table from Fedor Ivanovich Dólokhov and Nicholas Rostóv.  

Pierre is unhappy because he received a letter from his cousin earlier stating that Pierre's new wife, Hélène is having an affair with Dólokhov, which serves to confirm the rumours already flying about town.  Berzúkhov is especially insulted as he previously helped Dólokhov out by giving him money and accommodation in his home.

Eventually Pierre snaps, calls Dólokhov a scoundrel and challenges him to a duel the following morning.

The next morning arrives and pistols are handed to Dólokhov and Pierre, who has to ask how the trigger works, as he has never fired a gun before.

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 3

The pre-dinner drinks go on, and we learn that Pierre  doesn't fit in properly with young men or old men, because of his wealth and youth, respectively.

Count Ilya Rostóv introduces his son, Nicholas Rostóv to General Bagratión, who has had his moustache trimmed.  Nicholas behaves awkwardly.

Dinner is served.

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 2

Rostóv, pleased to be home, has a new outfit and is showing it off in Moscow society.  He is no longer interested in a relationship with Sonja and has instead been doing manly things, such as going to brothels; going on sprees with Denisóv; and to a place called the English Club.

His father, Count Ilya Rostóv organsises a dinner for General Bagratión at the English Club and all of the main figures from the war are there.  Various events of the war are discussed, and it comes to pass that nobody realises that Prince Andrew Bolkónski has been captured by the French, and is still alive.
