Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 20

After Pierre leaves dinner, Natasha begs Mary to tell her what she and Pierre spoke about.

Mary sees a light, previously extinguished, reignite in Natasha's eyes, and tries to ignore the niggling feeling that Natasha has gotten over her brother too quickly.

Mary relates the conversation to Natasha and Natasha is upset that Pierre will go to Petersburg on the following day, and is both satisfied and agitated by the state of things.

Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 18

Pierre puts off his trip to Petersburg, and returns to Mary's house for dinner over several evenings.  He is infatuated with Natasha and he is overstaying his welcome with Mary, who seems tired of his long visits.

Eventually he gets to speak to Mary alone, and asks her if there is any chance for him and Natasha.  As Natasha is still in mourning black, Mary thinks it unwise for him to make any moves, but says that she will facilitate the union.  She tells Pierre to go to Petersburg the following day.

Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 17

Pierre stays for dinner, and Natasha and Mary insist on hearing about Pierre's experiences in the war. 

He relates them, and finishes just after 3am.   Mary sees that love is possible between Pierre and Natasha.

When Mary and Natasha go to bed, Natasha remarks on what an impressive man Pierre has become.

Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 16

The three friends discuss the deaths of Petya Rostóv and Prince Andrew.  

Natasha leaves the room and Mary remarks that this is the first time that Natasha had spoken of the lead up to Prince Andrew's death.

Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 15

Pierre stays in the unburnt portion of his house in Moscow, and receives many visitors. 

He goes to visit Mary, and finds her in her apartments with a companion.  They begin to speak, and doesn't recognise that Mary's companion is Natasha.  Mary tells Pierre that her companion is Natasha, and Pierre suddenly recognises her as a thinner, much more solemn, kinder version of her former self.

Pierre is reminded that he is in love with her, and betrays himself by getting flushed and stuttery.

Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 3

Natasha is the only one able to attend to her mother effectively.

Princess Mary delays her trip to Moscow by three weeks, and during this time, she and Natasha become the best of friends, and are gradually able to forget about Andrew's death. 

After three weeks, Mary returns to Moscow, and Natasha goes with her.  She is to see doctors there, as she has become pale and thin.

Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 2

Petya has been killed. Natasha runs out to find her father weeping uncontrollably in the hall.  He insists that Natasha go to her mother.

Natasha stays with her mother, who is delirious with grief for three days, and on the evening of the third day, Natalya begins to weep for the first time.

Volume 3: Book 15 - Chapter 1

Natasha and Princess Mary are both grieving over Andrew's death.  

Princess Mary emerges from it sooner, as she feels a great responsibility to her nephew, who has developed a cough from sleeping in a damp bedroom.  Mary speaks about returning to Moscow, and asks Natasha to go with her. Natasha refuses as she is not ready to leave and grieves for some time, but eventually realises that at least Prince Andrew is no longer in pain.  

The maid comes to get her from her bedroom as her father has terrible news regarding her youngest brother, Pétya.

Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 16

Prince Andrew, prior to becoming odd (as described by Natasha to Mary,knew he was dying and also, held a great love for Natasha.

He has a dream that death waited for him behind , and he feels that he died in that dream.  For the next two days, he behaves oddly and distantly, until Mary arrives.

Andrew continues to behave in this way for a few days, and then he dies.  Everyone weeps.

Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 15

Young Prince Nicholas - now 7 years old.

Location:

Mary discovers Andrew in a cold state of calm, which is very upsetting to her.  He has found some kind of holy existence in the knowledge that he will soon die. 

His son Nicholas is brought to him, and Mary cries at the thought of Nicholas not having a father. Andrew tries to warm up and be compassionate, but with great difficulty.

Nicholas takes a liking to Natasha.

Mary travels with determination to see her brother.  She is met at the door by Sonya, who gives her big fake smiles, though Mary doesn't know why. 

Natasha comes running from Andrew's sickbed, and she and Mary cry on each others shoulders. Despite not liking her much before, Mary forgets this, and sees that Natasha is only sorrowful for her and her brother. 

Andrew's condition has taken a turn for the worse.

Sonya has been asked by Natalya to break off her engagement with Nicholas, as the family really could do with the money that will be gained if he marries Princess Mary instead.

Sonya refuses to promise, and after witnessing Natasha and Andrew being thrown back together, decides that God will somehow prevent Princess Mary and Nicholas getting married.  So, with a serene confidence that God will aid her marriage to Nicholas, she sends him a letter, breaking off the engagement. 

Natasha spends all of her time with Prince Andrew, who seems to be getting better.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 32

Prince Andrew is inspected by a doctor, who makes unhappy sounds at the appearance and smell of Andrews mortifying flesh. 

Andrew is in a kind of delirium, and is experiencing some kind of hyper-sensitivity.  

Natasha enters, and he thinks it is another hallucination, but is pleased that it is actually her, so that he can share his new god-given-love for her.  Andrew suddenly feels a great empathy, and feels bad for his harsh rejection of her.  When she begs his forgiveness, he tells her there is nothing to forgive.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 31

Natasha has been quiet all day, since learning that the wounded Prince Andrew is with travelling with them. She is not even interested in Moscow burning down.

After everyone goes to sleep, she sneaks out to visit Prince Andrew.  She finds him feverish, but he smiles and holds out his hand for her to take.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 17

Location:

Moscow 

Sonya discovers that one of the wounded officers is Prince Andrew, who is mortally wounded.  She tells the family, who are saddened by the news, but none of them tell Natasha the news when she asks. 

The Rostóv's are finally ready to leave, and join the procession of carts leaving the city.  Natasha keeps an eye on the cart carrying Prince Andrew, even though she doesn't know that it carries him. 

Natasha spots Pierre, who  seems to be disguised as a commoner, and when they speak, he is despondent.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 16

Location:

Moscow 

Berg, who is the Rostóv's son-in-law by virtue of being married to their daughter Vera, takes leave from the army and visits the Rostóv home.  

Berg asks for a set of drawers that is on one of the carts, to give to Vera, and Ilya goes off in a temper.  Natasha explains to Petya and Berg that their parents are fighting as Ilya wants to carry wounded soldiers, but Natalya wants to carry belongings.

Natasha goes and shouts at her mother, and it is agreed that all of their belongings shall be unloaded and put in storage, so that no wounded soldiers get left behind.

The servants approach this task with renewed energy, but Sonya tries to make sure that some belongings are brought along.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 15

The value of paper money in Moscow has dropped rapidly, while the value of supplies like cloth and horses have increased.

Ilya wakes from his sleep, and finds some wounded officers in the hall who ask him if they can go on one of his carts to escape Moscow.  The count consents, and orders some of the luggage to be unpacked from the carts to make room.

Natalya summons her husband after hearing complaints from Madame Schoss, and tells her husband that their belongings will be their only wealth, and that he must have them put back on the carts.

Natasha overhears, and asks why her mother objects.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 14

Madame Schoss returns from town, and frightens Natalya with news of rioting in the streets.

Natasha decides to get involved in the packing, and finally convinces everyone that she is not annoying by fitting some carpets and crockery into boxes that nobody else had success packing. She does this by abandoning all of the cheap wares.

The first of the wounded soldiers is brought into the house. To everyone's shock, it is Prince Andrew.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 13

Location:

Moscow

Natasha is sitting in her room, being nostalgic, looking at her ball dresses and bows.  She had tried to help pack the house, but kept getting in the way.

She decides to go for a walk, and sees the family's former housekeeper, Mávra Kuzmínichna, talking to an officer at the gate.  Mávra says that they would be more comfortable staying at the Rostóv home, since the family were leaving.  Natasha agrees, and gets permission from her parents for wounded soldiers to stay at the house in their absence. 

Natalya is upset and trying to get the family to leave as soon as possible, to prevent young Petya from joining the battle at Three Hills on the morrow.

Volume 3: Book 11 - Chapter 12

Natalya has spent months in a panic, as both of her sons, Nicholas and Petya have been away fighting.  She is, however, happy about Nicholas wanting to marry Princess Mary, as it could help the Rostov family financially.

Ilya finds a way to calm her by having Petya transferred for further training in Moscow, and by arranging other posts which don't actually involve fighting.

Since Petya has been home, he and Natasha have become silly.  They run up and down the halls of the house laughing, despite the household having to pack up because the French are coming.
