Volume 3: Book 12 - Chapter 14

Mary travels with determination to see her brother.  She is met at the door by Sonya, who gives her big fake smiles, though Mary doesn't know why. 

Natasha comes running from Andrew's sickbed, and she and Mary cry on each others shoulders. Despite not liking her much before, Mary forgets this, and sees that Natasha is only sorrowful for her and her brother. 

Andrew's condition has taken a turn for the worse.

Volume 1: Book 4 - Chapter 1

Location:

 The Rostóv house near Moscow

It is now 1806 and Nicholas Rostov and Vaska Denísov are on leave.  Nicholas convinces Denísov to travel with him, and both end up at the Rostóv's house late in the evening.

Nicholas's family is woken by their servants and are overjoyed to see him. 

In the morning, Nicholas has a conversation with his sister Natasha, who says that Sonya has decided to set him free, for she as much as she loves him, she wouldn't want to trap him.

At breakfast, Countess Natalya Rostova notices a new distance between her son Nicholas and his cousin, Sonya, and is concerned.

We learn that Natasha is in love with Boris, and that they will get married in four years.

Sonja and Nicholas are about to have a conversation.

Still at the Rostóv´s house.

There is a conversation about Nicholas wanting to run off to join the army because Boris Drubetskoy is in the army. He disagrees and looks embarrassed. In the meantime, his cousin, Sonya, is casting flirty looks in his direction, but he instead has a private chat with Julie, which upsets Sónya, who runs off. Nicholas notices and follows her out.

Book 1 - Chapter 10

Setting:

The Rostóv´s house.


It is both Countess Natalya Rostóva and her daughter, Natalya's birthday and they are receiving visitors with Princess Anna Mikháylovna Drubetskáya.

Princess Anna is pleased, as Prince Vasíli Kurágin kept his word and managed to get her son, Boris Drubetskóy, into the guard.

The gossip of the moment centres mostly on Pierre and his friends and their shenanigans.

The latest news of them involves an incident with the bear and a policeman, whereby the policeman was tied back-to-back with the bear, and both were then set free into a river. The bear proceeded to swim down the river with the policemen on its back.
