Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 30

Pierre oversleeps and misses the beginning of the battle.  He is eventually awakened by Boris who says that all the men and Kutúzov rode out ages ago.

Pierre gets ready quickly, and goes to have a look at the battle. The rolling green splendor of yesterday is now a beautiful scene of thousands of men; smoke from gun fire; and a mishmash of colours. 

He hears Kutúzov give an order to meet down near a crossing, and Pierre decides to go down there too.

Volume 2: Book 10 - Chapter 22

Pierre meets Boris, and Boris promises to show him the line, and though the right flank is very strong, Boris says that the left flank is stronger, but then makes a doubtful sounding remark about Kutúzov knowing what he was doing.

Pierre then goes to speak to Kutúzov about joining the battle, and Boris places himself conveniently near (to be overheard by Kutúzov), and says to Pierre that the militia have put on clean white shirts to be killed in on the morrow.

Kutúzov loses concentration, like old people do, on the conversation, and asks his aide-de-camp to recite a verse, to which Kutúzov nods his head in rhythm to. 

Kutúzov then rides off with Pierre to show him the lines.

Volume 2: Book 8 - Chapter 8

The Rostóvs go to the opera in the evening, despite Natasha still being upset from earlier events.

The other opera attendees believe that Natasha's beauty is even greater since her time in the country.

The Rostóvs are greeted by Countess Hélène Berzúkhova, and Count Rostóv tells her that he will visit her.

Natasha remarks on Hélène's beauty.

They also see Boris Drubetskóy and Julia Karagina kanoodling. 

Volume 2: Book 8 - Chapter 5

Boris Drubestskóy, in his efforts to marry a rich heiress, decides to pursue Julie Karagina over Princess Mary Bolkónskaya - though he is more attracted to Princess Mary, he finds her too weird.

Julie, 27 and never married, has adopted the demeanor of someone who has suffered terrible injustices, which Boris plays up to by writing melancholy poetry to her. 

Boris cannot bring himself to propose as he sees a falseness to Julie's melancholy, until Anatole Kurágin comes to town with the intention of courting Julie. Boris panics and proposes, and they both leave their angst-ridden states and become joyful.

Volume 2: Book 8 - Chapter 4

The dinner party ends, and Princess Mary and Count Pierre are left alone.  He tells her that Boris Drubetskóy is looking for a wealthy heiress to marry and that she and Julie Karagina are in his sights. 

Mary bursts into tears and says that she would marry anyone.  Pierre tries to find out what is the matter, but she will not elaborate. 

Mary says that she is nervous about meeting Natasha Rostova and that she is worried about her brother and father having a falling out over the upcoming marriage.

Volume 2: Book 6 - Chapter 13

The Rostóv home, Petersburg

It is bedtime and Natasha runs into her mothers bed and leaps in while her mother is saying her prayers.  The countess affects to be annoyed, but is in truth fond of these occurrences, which happen regularly while Count Rostóv is at his club.

They speak of Boris Drubetskóy and Natalya tells Natasha that she should stop Boris from visiting, as Natasha can not marry him due to his poor finances.  Natasha protests slightly but seems to accept it in good graces. 

The following day, the countess has a quiet word with Boris, who subsequently stops visiting.

Volume 2: Book 6 - Chapter 12

Natasha celebrates her 16th birthday, and remembers that four years ago, her and Boris had made a childish engagement to be married after she turned 16.

Boris returns to Petersburg, and visits the Rostóvs out of politeness.  He cannot afford to marry Natasha due to her families financial woes and their subsequently low social standing, as it would ruin his career. He is also intending to marry a wealthy heiress, who is not named.

Despite Boris' determination to not resume any childish affections with Natasha, he discovers that she has grown into a beautiful young women and starts to spend more and more time at the Rostóv home.

Volume 2: Book 6 - Chapter 10

Pierre makes several entries in his diary, outlining his distaste for his wife Hélèn's friends and his hatred for Boris Drubetskóy who has also joined the Freemasons. 

Pierre goes on to describe his dreams, which indicate that he feels he is not serving God as well as he could.  

Joseph Alexéevich Bazdéev (his original sponsor in joining the masons) comes to him in another dream, and tells him that he should be intimate with his wife, as it is wrong to withhold husbandly affections from her.  The next day he receives a letter  from Bazdéev saying that Pierre should have some conjugal visits with his wife.

Volume 1: Book 5 - Chapter 19

Nicholas Rostóv goes to see Boris Drubetskóy, who has risen very quickly through the ranks.  

Drubetskóy greets him indifferently and listens to Rostóv's appeal to get Denísov's letter to the Emperor with the same attitude with which one might listen to their subordinate.  

Drubetskóy tells Rostóv that the Emperor tends to dole out severe punishments for such actions, and that Rostóv would be better appealing to the commander of the corps.

Rostóv loses his temper and says that Drubetskóy doesn't actually want to help them at all.

Volume 1: Book 5 - Chapter 7

The soiree goes on and Prince Hippolyte holds everyone's attention with a series of jokes about Prussia.

The evening ends and Hélène insists that Boris Drubetskóy go around to see her on the coming Tuesday.  He goes, and doesn't understand why he was invited, as she barely speaks to him.  

Hélène then requests that he go to see her again for dinner the following evening, and the book then describes Boris as becoming an "intimate" in the countess's house.

Volume 1: Book 5 - Chapter 6

Anna Pávlovna is holding another soiree with the cream of Russian society.  They gossip mostly about Pierre, and how he has once again fallen out of favour.   

Boris is the star of the moment, having risen through the ranks despite his lack of money, and Anna Pávlovna steers the conversation so that he becomes the centre of it.  He speaks well, and the people enjoy the novelty of it all.

Volume 1: Book 3 - Chapter 9

Prince Andrew Bolkónski

Location:

Olmütz

Boris travels from the military camp to Olmütz with the intention of speaking to Prince Andrew Bolkónski about being promoted to an adjutant.

Boris gets to see Prince Andrew on his second attempt, who throws his weight around and pauses a meeting with a general to speak with Boris, who is only a lieutenant.  Prince Andrew takes him to see Prince Dolgorúkov, who holds greater sway in such matters.

Prince Dolgorúkov gossips happily for a while but is called away just as Prince Andrew starts to ask for the promotion on behalf of Boris.  Prince Dolgorúkov agrees to do anything to help Prince Andrew and Boris, before greeting Prince Adam Czatoryski, who we learn Prince Andrew simultaneously admires and dislikes.

Volume 1: Book 3 - Chapter 7

Location:

A camp 10 miles from Olmütz

Boris arrives at the camp to deliver a letter, some money from his family, and a letter of recommendation to General Bagratíon from Rostóvs family and Princess Anna Mikháylovna Drubetskáya.

Rostóv casts the letter of recommendation on to the floor, saying he doesn't want to be an adjutant, and Boris says that it would be better than being on the front line. 

Nicholas recounts the epic story of how he was wounded, leaving out the bit about falling of his horse and running away from the French.  

Halfway through the story, Prince Andrew comes in, and rolls his eyes in response to all of the bragging, and says he will come back later to talk to Boris.  Nicholas takes great offense, and the two have a heated exchange of words, ending with Bolkónski saying that he didn't take offense, as Nicholas is young and his rudeness was of not matter to him.

Book 1 - Chapter 16

Count Berzúkhov house.

Pierre arrives back and requests of his half-sisters to see their father, but they are nasty, and say that the Count is too ill and upset about the bear incident. We also learn that Pierre was expelled from Petersburg over the bear incident, and so has had to come back to Moscow.

Anna sends Boris upstairs to visit Pierre, who doesn´t recognise him at first. Boris invites Pierre to the Rostóv´s for dinner that evening. Boris also makes a point of telling Pierre that he is not wanting the Count´s money.

Book 1 - Chapter 14

Setting:

At the Rostóv´s house.

Countess Natalya Rostova and Princess Anna Mikháylovna Drubetskáya are getting closer to having their conversation, and ask Véra to leave.

Véra leaves and finds the young couples canoodling. She is rather rude to them, they tell her that she is always unpleasant and she goes away.

Meanwhile, the Countess and Princess Anna  start to have their conversation and discuss Boris´s transfer to the guard. Princess Anna will approach Boris´s godfather, Count Cyril Vladimirovich Bezúkhov to have Boris moved to further safety as she does not have the money, and mentions something about a lawsuit which is draining her funds.

Book 1 - Chapter 13

We learn that Natasha is in love with Boris, and that they will get married in four years.

Sonja and Nicholas are about to have a conversation.

Book 1 - Chapter 11

Setting:

 The Rostóv´s house.

There is a lull in the conversation and Countess Natalya is ready for people to leave. A gaggle of children run in, giving the visitors something more to talk about.

Princess Anna Mikháylovna Drubetskáya then asks her son, Boris to order a coach for her.

Book 1 - Chapter 10

Setting:

The Rostóv´s house.

It is both Countess Natalya Rostóva and her daughter, Natalya's birthday and they are receiving visitors with Princess Anna Mikháylovna Drubetskáya.

Princess Anna is pleased, as Prince Vasíli Kurágin kept his word and managed to get her son, Boris Drubetskóy, into the guard.

The gossip of the moment centres mostly on Pierre and his friends and their shenanigans.

The latest news of them involves an incident with the bear and a policeman, whereby the policeman was tied back-to-back with the bear, and both were then set free into a river. The bear proceeded to swim down the river with the policemen on its back.
